Wayne’s World turns 30, schwing!
1992 must’ve been quite the year! Just a few days ago I wrote about Image Comics marking 30 years of amazing comic making (which you can read here). Now it looks like Wayne and Garth are turning 30 as well. Well, at least their movie is.
Released on February 14, 1992, Wayne’s World was introduced into the pop culture hall of fame almost immediately. Personally, it would become one of the most quoted films between me and best friend. How can you go wrong with such iconic phrases such as, “Schwing!” and “Are you mental?” Not to mention the never duplicated, “If you’re gonna’ spew, spew into this,” as well as, “asphinhtersayswhat?” Trust me, I could go on.
Wayne’s World originated from a SNL skit with Mike Myers and Dana Carvey. It was brought to the big screen by producer Lorne Michaels and Penelope Spheeris. Michaels had sat in the producer chair plenty of times before and since, but for Spheeris this was bigger than she would imagine. In a recent interview she said, “I had experienced nothing like that in my career, previously.” When asked about the impact the movie would make she said she had “no idea.”
The movie would do more than just introduce new phrases into teenaged lexicon. It would breathe new life into the Queen classic Bohemian Rhapsody-as well as set a standard for SNL movies to follow. Spheeris said that everyone kept questioning whether they could make a full length feature film out of five minutes of sketch comedy. She assured them she could. Later she admitted she had no idea if they’d be able to make it work or not. Fortunately for the world at large, they did.
To mark the anniversary of Wayne’s World the film is getting it’s own Limited Edition Blu-ray Steelbook which should be available now.
