Pop Culture Update: Friday March 25, 2022
A lot of exciting things have been happening in and around pop culture this past week-let’s get into it!
Netflix releases first look at Stranger Things Season 4
Ah, it’s good to see the gang getting back together again. Except that they may not exactly be getting back together? The series picks up with our familiar crew in several different parts of the world: Russia, Hawkins Indiana, and California. They’ll have to figure out a way to defeat the Upside down working remotely…man if they only had the internet… The series will debut on Netflix on May 27th, and because there’s so much story to tell, will follow up immediately with Season 5 on July 1st. You can see all of the photos released by Netflix here.
Matt Reeve’s shows us The Joker
Warner Bros. and Matt Reeves gave us a pretty clear picture of The Batman’s Joker in a deleted scene released earlier this week. The clip is a solid 5 minutes of extra footage and it’s so good! It made me want to see the movie all over again. Barry Keoghan’s Joker is pretty mangled up, not sure if that’s from the vat of chemicals he fell in or if there’s some other reason, but regardless it does the job of being creepy. I wasn’t completely sold until Keoghan speaks. He brings are certain weird humanity to The Joker that I liked. Watch the clip here.
Tolkien’s The Silmarillion is getting illustrated
Now that Amazon’s bringing a LOTR prequel to prime, it’s time for some deep dives into less tread paths of the world of Middle Earth. What better way than to read and see The Silmarillion through the eyes of Tolkien himself. That’s right, the book will include paintings and drawings done by Tolkien’s own hand…wait, was I the only one who didn’t know he was an artist? An article on Nerdist.com reports, “It will be the first fully illustrated edition of Tolkien’s 1977 book. Originally his son published it posthumously after his father’s death. Unlike his narrative novels, which take place during Middle-earth’s Third Age, the book explores the history and myths of the First and Second Ages.” It will be available in bookstore in October 2022.
And these are the top three news articles that caught my attention this week!
A super quick reminder that Fanboys will be out at Golden Triangle Mall on Saturday (March 26) for Denton Comic Con by Fanboys. We’ll have Funko pops, cups/mugs, collectible toys, games, and I’ll be there as well selling various art prints. The event is from 11am-7pm, come on out and say hey!
