Pop Culture Update for April 1st, 2022
No tricks, I promise.
It’s been a big week for pop culture. This week has had quite a few trailers drop for upcoming films, Moonknight hits Disney+ with a splash, while Morbius hit theaters with a thud. Let’s get into it shall we?
Only Murders in the Building releases teaser trailer for season two
Hulu’s Only Murders in the Building, a show about a trio of amateur true crime podcasters released a teaser trailer earlier this week as well as a release date of June 28th. I’m a big fan of the first season and the creators ensure us that, although our protagonists are highly suspicious, they’re equally not involved in the most recent murder that season one teased us with in the finale. See the teaser here.
Top Gun: Maverick releases new trailer
Tom Cruise is back in a sequel that’s 35 years in the making. The trailer’s two and a half minutes long and during it people say words and stuff, but as soon as I saw the footage shot while these planes are off the ground, I was sold. Watch the trailer.
Minions: The Rise of Gru trailer premiers
I’m not ashamed to admit it-I love all of these films. The Despicable Me franchise always makes me laugh and even The Minions movie (movies?) have been a delight. Which means I’m completely on board with a Gru supervillain origin story. The trailer seemed to be…pretty funny. I’m just hoping they didn’t give too much away. Minons: The Rise of Gru hits theaters July 1st.
Moon Knight debuts on Disney+
The first episode of Moon Knight, Marvel and Disney+’s latest addition to the MCU via television mini series debuted this Wednesday. I watched the first episode with intrigue, as this is one comic character I know absolute nothing about. And, after watching the first episode, find that Oscar Isaac’s character Steven Grant knows just about as much as I do. The episode delivers on many levels, except we don’t get to see Moon Knight in all his glory until the very end. What’s that saying in showbiz? Always leave them wanting more? Well done Moon Knight, but you better deliver next week!
Morbius hits theaters with dismal buzz
In all honesty, I wasn’t too hyped to see Morbius. A second confession: I have yet to see Venom 2 Let There Be Carnage. It’s just, I’m never quite sure what to expect when Sony delivers a comic book movie. As the case with Morbius, the latest meme I saw showed a parked car with a smashed in window, the caption being, “Be careful out there. I had two tickets for Morbius on the seat of my car and someone broke in and left four more.” Oof.
So, what else is noteworthy?
- Obi-Wan Kenobi changes release date to Friday May 27th and will drop the first two episodes.
- The Spirited Away stage adaptation sets tour dates and releases photos of the incredible stage production.
- E3 2022, the Electronic Entertainment Expo, has been completely canceled. No in person or online expo. A statement explains the cancelation is due to Covid fears and that they’re putting all their energy into an amazing in-person experience for 2023.
