Spider-man Turns 60

Spider-man turns 60 in “Amazing Fantasy” #1000

This year marks the 60th anniversary of nerdy Peter Parker’s appearance in Amazing Fantasy #15. A radioactive spider, a wrestling match and one dead uncle later and we have the Spider-man we know and love today. Well, one of them. With the Spiderverse exploding into as many directions as the actual universe, and at what feels like the same speed I’m not sure who is what anymore. That’s probably a blog for another time though.

The big news is that Marvel will roll out the red carpet for everyone’s favorite wall crawler this August with Amazing Fantasy #1000. It’s a giant sized one shot comic that will bring together many industry greats to write and draw Spidey tales to thrill and amaze. Among those creators mentioned include Neil Gaiman, who needs no introduction. Armando Iannucci-Emmy award winning creator behind Veep and Avenue 5-will make his comic debut with this issue. Dan Slott, Anthony Falcone, and a certain Jonathan Hickman are also in the writers ring.

The book will also feature the artistic talents of Jim Cheung, Michael Cho, Terry Dodson and cover artwork by John Romita Jr.

The collection of stories will explore the past and future of Amazing Spider-Man storytelling in tales that leave a profound impact on the Spider-Man mythos and showcase why Spidey is one of the most beloved heroes in history.

Spider-man was one of my favorite comics growing up. Recently I feel like the character has suffered from gross over saturation, along with all the Batman titles over at DC, both heroe’s comics I’ve grown dis-interested in. But, y’know, I’m always up for a good one shot, and Gaiman’s attached? I guess I’m sold. Talk to your local comic shop about reserving your copy so when it does hit shelves it’s not gone before you get there. Not sure where to find your nearest comic shop? Plug your zip code into this website and it’ll help you out! And…Happy 60th Spidey! You look great!
