TMNT:Shredder’s Revenge

The new TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge video game brings back all the arcade feels

Releasing today is TMNT:Shredder’s Revenge, the new Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtle video game that takes you back to the video arcade days. Rendered in beautiful pixelated design and game play that really feels like your childhood.

I had very few games growing up, one of them was the TMNT Nintendo video game. And yet, I got more enjoyment playing the arcade version. There was just something else about it. My parents spent a fortune while I fed quarters into that giant machine trying to get to the final boss battle. TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge brings back all those same arcade feels but with a modern gameplay sensibility.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge features modernized gameplay rooted in timeless classic brawling mechanics, brought to you by the beat ’em up experts at Dotemu (Streets of Rage 4) and developer Tribute Games, in partnership with Nickelodeon. Bash your way through gorgeous pixel art environments and slay tons of hellacious enemies with your favorite Turtle, each with his own skills and moves – making each run unique!

The game got a glowing review on Polygon.com, here’s a bit of what they had to say about the game play:

Mechanically, Shredder’s Revenge is simple, but not without depth. You certainly can get by through button mashing — the main attack easily chains with itself for big damage, for instance. But there are a variety of simple combinations that round out each character: you can throw opponents in different directions with the D-pad; you can dive by hitting attack in midair; or you can hold attack for a heavy swing. And of course, you can chain them all together.

TMNT: Shredder’s Revenge brings you all four turtles to choose to fight with and adds April O’Neil in her classic yellow jumpsuit, Master Splinter and Casey Jones. You eventually go up against all the classic baddies: Bebop, Rocksteady, Shredder, Krang and as many Foot soldiers you can shake a sai at. Again, from Polygon.com: “There are two modes to bash your way through. The Arcade mode is the classic experience — limited lives, no saves. The Story Mode is more generous with lives and lets you progress through the story on a pixelated top-down map, complete with side quests that reward points, which unlock new abilities for each character. Story progression and abilities are saved between play sessions, whereas each time you head into the Arcade, you start over from square one. Both offer three difficulty levels, which essentially boil down to easy, medium, and hard — or chill, okay, and gnarly.”

I’m really not a big gamer, but for an old guy who grew up in the 80’s this makes me wish I was one.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge will be released on June 16 on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, Windows PC via Steam, and Xbox One.
