Okay, let’s just go ahead and say it. This one’s for the nerds. Nerds like me. In 1992 a handful of super talented comic creators decide to ditch the Big Two and make a new comic company called Image-maybe you’ve heard of them. However, new companies often need a little help getting off the ground. Image President Todd McFarlane who was-at the time-already a super talented artist in his own right was trying to drum up some hype over his newest original comic, Spawn. So, why not have Spawn meet Batman?
Full disclaimer, I bought that comic. I read that comic. As a result I even have a huge poster of fan art I made from one of the splash pages that was in that comic. That comic was awesome. I mean, the writing was…meh…but that comic was awesome! So let’s not try to kid ourselves this go-round: does it really matter what happens in this book? Of course not, but will it packed with some amazing artwork? You betcha!

The new Batman/Spawn one-shot will sport a main cover by Capullo, McFarlane, & McCaig, and just so many variant covers from artists including McFarlane himself, Capullo, Francesco Mattina , Gabrielle Dell’Otto, J. Scott Campbell, Jim Lee, Sean Murphy, Jason Fabok, and Brett Booth.

All you really had to say to me is the name “Jim Lee” and I’m in. Of course Jim Lee’s gonna’ feature some art here, how can he not!? Every nerd knows that this book is really all about the artwork. Batman and Spawn, grim and gritty, pointy ears and spiky chains, Gotham meets Hell, need I go on? In this case even the creators know that this book is really just for the fun of it.
“Look, this is really simple. I get to play with one of the greatest comic characters ever (Batman), get to reunite with amazing artist Greg Capullo, AND am able to mix in my own creation (Spawn) into the storyline. These are the types of projects many of us creators in the comic industry only get to be a part of a few times in our careers,” said writer Todd McFarlane.
“I was fortunate enough to be able to draw both Spawn and Batman each for over a decade,” said artist Greg Capullo. “Now I get to use those decades of experience to bring fans the event they’ve waited nearly 20 years to see happen. Spawn and Batman together again. It’s gonna be fire.”
McFarlane added, “My goal with this book is two-fold; First to just make it as fun a read as possible both visually and story wise. Then second, I hope this book will continue to add to some of the many reasons any of us actually collect superhero comic books. That’s to release an “Event” book that folks will remember for years to come. This should be one heck of a nice holiday gift!”
