D23 Expo recap

A lot has happened in the world of pop culture over the weekend! Really, just in the world of all things Disney! Thanks to the D23 Expo there’s a lot to talk about. For those newbies out there, D23 Expo is sort of a Disney only convention. A gathering of all things Disney. And, like San Diego Comic-Con, several big announcements happen during it. So, I’m here to highlight the things that pinged on my radar! For all the announcements be sure to visit d23.com.

Hocus Pocus 2. They released the full official trailer for Hocus Pocus 2. Set to hit Disney Plus on September 30th, the trailer gives us a sneak peek at the Sanderson sisters as kids. And gives us a ton a great moments as we see them in the spotlight once again as well as marching through what looks to be the cosmetic section of a Walgreens type store. It looks to be as fun as anticipated, let’s just hope the writers and directors got the memo.

Live Action Little Mermaid. Disney finally gives us a first look at the live action Little Mermaid movie that feels like it’s been filming for years. How long has it been since those first on-set photos were leaked? Set to hit theaters next year the teaser gives us a glimpse of the sunken ship that the original film opens with. We also see Ariel in her underwater cavern of human trinkets, as well as a taste of Halle Bailey singing “Part of Your World.”

Secret Invasion trailer. The trailer for Secret Invasion was released, starring Samuel L. Jackson as Nick Fury once again. Don Cheadle returns in that series and its fun to see some MCU vets back on the screen again. Secret Invasion is about shapeshifting Skrulls who’ve been working under cover on Earth for a while now. The trailer looks great and, most importantly, serious. I think I’m all good with the Marvel comedies at this point.

Mandalorian 3. The official trailer for The Mandalorian Season 3 is finally out (it was leaked a bit earlier this year), but now I can watch it on my TV with my speakers up full blast, over and over again. My most favorite things to come from Star Wars and company in recent years, is this rogue Mandalorian and his little green sidekick Grogu. So pumped to see what’s in store in season 3.

Willow is back! I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know they were making a Willow sequel until this trailer dropped early on during the weekend, but it looks awesome. Personal opinion: they don’t make enough main stream fantasy movies or tv shows. I mean, sure we got Rings of Power now but before that the landscape was pretty desolate. Willow looks like it’s in the perfect spot to fix that little problem.

So these were the top of my list of highlights, but there’s so many more. Here’s another handful of exciting announcements:

  • Indiana Jones 5 is set to hit theaters June 30, 2023
  • Marvel Studios Special Presentation debuted Werewolf by Night, it’s a whole spooky, black and white mood set to drop on October 7th on Disney Plus.
  • The team roster was revealed for MCU’s Thunderbolts
  • Disney teased upcoming films: Peter Pan & Wendy, The Haunted Mansion and Disenchanted
  • Finally, Pixar announced Inside Out 2 and a new original film Elemental.

So that’s a wrap on some of my picks of things I’m looking forward to in the world of Disney. As I mentioned before, this highlights all the things they announced. Be sure to visit the website for a complete roundup of all things D23!
