Hot Wheels Movie

A Hot Wheels movie is in the works

Mattel Films and Warner Brothers Pictures are developing a Hot Wheels movie, and it most probably will be live action. This may be exciting news for both fans of the collectible cars, car enthusiasts, and maybe even a few of us over at Fanboys (we love our Hot Wheels races), but I’m wondering: isn’t there already a huge car film franchise? I’m thinking about The Fast & the Furious but if you might have thought of Transformers, well then, that makes two.

You never know though. I’m staying open minded about the Spirit Halloween Movie (at least until I see the first trailer), so why go into the Hot Wheels movie with the same attitude? Just in case I’m not selling it enough for you, here’s what Mattel Films Executive Producer, Robbie Brenner has to say.

“As the global leader in car culture, Hot Wheels has been igniting the challenger spirit in auto enthusiasts for generations… Fans of all ages are now in for the ride of their lives with the incredible talent of J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot joining us alongside Warner Bros. Pictures to transform Hot Wheels’ legendary IP into a thrilling story for the big screen.”

With J.J. Abrams’ Bad Robot now attached to the project, that opens up tons of possibilities. Namely that they’ll botch the third film and we’ll all be yelling for a re-boot. According to the official announcement the film will be “a high-throttle actioner, which will showcase some of the world’s hottest and sleekest cars, monster trucks, and motorcycles.”

Which is great and all but cars can only take a film so far. I’m crossing my fingers that there’s some half-way decent writing to go along with the “hottest cars” and maybe some capable acting also. Else we’re looking at yet another big budget disappointment.
