Meow Wolf is opening a two new portals in Texas

If you’ve never been to Meow Wolf it’s hard to describe it. It’s an art piece. It’s interactive. There’s a story attached, but only if you look for one. It’s transportive, otherworldly, mind blowing, inspired and just plain fun.

Meow Wolf is a place. It began in Santa Fe, New Mexico where a group of artists got together and built a house inside a bowling alley that isn’t an ordinary house. The house has been breached by portals to other dimensions, alternate universes, places and planets. Open the right closet door, cabinet or drawer and you can sneak a peek inside those other dimensions. If you can fit through the opening feel free to go in and find yourself in a place you’ve never seen or been before-but guaranteed you’ll want to go back.

This is the experience that is Meow Wolf, and they’re opening up two new permanent locations in Texas, one in Grapevine and the other in Houston. Meow Wolf’s fourth venue will be located within a former big-box retail store at the Grapevine Mills mall.

“Malls have been such an incredible and weird part of the American story, especially for a lot of us that grew up in the 80’s and 90’s. It is an exciting thought that these spaces could be filled with incredible art and immersive experiences, opening a new era of opportunity for the creative economy.”

Meow Wolf founder Vince Kadlubek

Kadlubek added, “Meow Wolf has always been about making art accessible to as many folks as possible, and in areas that may not have as many artistic offerings.” Meow Wolf plans to open the newest location as early as next year, 2023 with the location in Houston scheduled for 2024.

Artist’s rendering of Grapevine location

Personally, I’ve visited the Santa Fe location twice: once in 2018 and again in 2019. It remains one of the most amazing places I’ve ever visited. As a visitor, you’re not only invited to interact with the artwork, but encouraged. And I don’t mean something as simple as, “feel free to touch the art.” Nope, feel free to climb on, crawl under and through, take photos of, video, feel, touch, push, pull and lounge on the artwork. A single day spent in Meow Wolf is enough to inspire wonder and imagination and creativity for an entire year. It’s very much a one-of-a-kind experience, and it’s coming to Texas, y’all!
