Obi-Wan Teaser

Obi-Wan Teaser Trailer Drops

First it was the Entertainment Weekly magazine cover to hit the socials on Wednesday morning. Which was enough-honestly-to get me excited. Soon after, the teaser trailer hit and that was it. Day. Made. So, what is there to know going into this new Star Wars mini-series? Let’s get into it.

The description that was released with the trailer gives us some context:

The story begins 10 years after the dramatic events of “Star Wars: Revenge of the Sith” where Obi-Wan Kenobi faced his greatest defeat—the downfall and corruption of his best friend and Jedi apprentice, Anakin Skywalker, who turned to the dark side as evil Sith Lord Darth Vader.

One of the highlights from the trailer is this quick sneak peek of little Luke, pretending to be a flying a starfighter. Again we find ourselves on Tatooine and see glimpses of that little desert igloo we all know so well. It’s also fun to think we’ll meet Luke as a child-knowing what we know now.

Okay, so who’s this guy? This is the Grand Inquisitor. Basically, after the Jedi fall and Anakin turns to the dark side embracing and becoming Darth Vader, Obi-Wan and cohorts go into hiding. Still, the Empire wants to be rid of them entirely after all, they may resurface and challenge the seat of power, right (spoiler alert, they do)? Enter the Grand Inquisitor-who debuted in Star Wars Rebels. He answers straight to Darth Vader and it’s his job to manage a group of Jedi hunters and assassins who are trying to root out Jedis that survived the purge.

Which brings us to Inquisitor Reva. Touted as “ruthlessly ambitious” she’s the new big baddie and probably the most imminent threat to Obi-Wan. She reports to the Grand Inquisitor and will stop at nothing to hunt down the Jedi. She herself is force-sensitive and should make for some pretty awesome saber duels.

What else looks cool? This shot from planet Daiyu! It gives me some strong Blade Runner vibes. Writer Joby Harold describes Daiyu this way, “sort of has a Hong Kong feel to it. It’s got a graffiti-ridden nightlife and is kind of edgy. It’s just got a different lane and a different feeling.” That could be a good or a bad thing. I’m still cringing over the mods from Boba Fett, so lets hope that “different lane” still feels like Star Wars and not some homage to something else.

Although we don’t see it in this teaser, it’s already established that Hayden Christensen will be reprising his role as young Darth Vader. Speculation is that the show’s plot may revolve around Vader hunting down Kenobi to enact revenge, but that’s only hearsay at this point. If you haven’t seen the trailer yet, check it out for yourself below! And set your calendar for May 25th, when the series drops exclusively on Disney+.
