Only Murders in the Building

Hulu releases Only Murders in the Building Season 2 teaser trailer

It looks like TV and me are starting to like each other again. Allow me to admit that maybe I’m starting to come around-TV, in fact, has always liked me. It has been-for years-trying to get me to sit and stare at it for a mere half hour. I’ve been immune to its advances, though. In the past I was working a full time job in photography, “full time” being a flexible term as some weeks I’d put in 60 hours or more. As an aspiring artist, the only time I had left at home was spent sitting at my drawing desk and not on my couch.

I became victimized in conversations when they’d ask if I had seen Sopranos, or Mad Men the night before. My answer was always, “I don’t watch TV.” Because I didn’t. I didn’t have time. But things might be changing for me. In today’s work-from-home environs I can manage my full time job here-writing and trying to keep a bead on the pulse of nerd and pop culture-as well as work on art and comics and still have time left in the day to sit for a TV show. I can’t say I hate it.

One of the shows that has been able to attract my waxing attention span was “Only Murders in the Building” that debuted on Hulu last year. The show about a trio of miss-matched mates, played respectively by Steve Martin, Martin Short, and Selena Gomez-who start a true crime podcast about someone who was indeed murdered inside their low-rise New York apartment building.

Already being a fan of Steve and Martin and reserving judgment for Gomez, I immediately loved the show. The humor, the reactions, the banter between the stars-so good. Not to mention it was also a decent Whodunit as well that had me guessing until…well…maybe the second to last episode.

It looks like our trio of true crime troubadours are back at it in season two. In a recent teaser trailer we see…well not much…as not to give too much away. Alas, it’s just a taste, though we do get glimpses of Amy Schumer and Cara Delevingne who will make cameo appearances and even a fleeting glimpse of Nathan Lane-one of last season’s possible suspects.

I can’t say that it was Only Murders in the Building alone that converted me to TV, they got a lot of help from Disney+’s new family of Marvel and Star Wars limited series television runs such as Wanda Vision, Loki, The Mandalorian, etc. I have managed to clear my evening schedules to make room for these shows as well. Although I still keep to a pretty limited palette. Watching anything that came out before say, 2020 I’m not interested in. I’ve no use for Breaking Bad or Game of Thrones. These shows just aren’t apart of the conversation anymore. But now that I find myself spending an hour or so a couple times a week to watch TV, it means that now I can be.

Season two of Only Murders in the Building aires on Hulu June 28th and if you watch it…let me know!
