Pop-Culture Update 001

Pop Culture Update: Monday, March 14th

It is inevitable-the only thing that’s constant is change, the pop culture landscape is no exception. There’s been some big shifts on the What’s-Next horizon lately and since I wrote about them before I thought I need to report it back to you guys here in this space as well! So, let’s get into it!

  • First up: DC shuffles their movie release dates for 2022-2023. I wrote back in February that 2022 may be The Year for the DCEU! What with The Batman being such a big hit, it looked like DC was off to a great start! But that hope has been…delayed. Warner Brothers announced they’re moving back all of the release dates of the big DC films that were slated for this year and moved up one that was slated for next year. Here’s the new line up:
  1. SHAZAM FURY OF THE GODS-moved UP from June 2023 to December 16, 2022
  2. DC LEAGUE OF SUPER PETS-moved from May to July 29, 2022
  3. BLACK ADAM-from July to October 21, 2022
  4. THE FLASH-from November to June 23, 2023
  5. AQUAMAN AND THE LOST KINGDOM-from December to March 17, 2023
  • January comic book sales numbers are in! Image and BOOM! Studios top the bestseller lists with Viz Media coming in third trailed by a singe Marvel comic. Spawn: The Scorched #1 came in at the number one best seller followed by Saga #55 and Stray Dogs: Dog Days #2. When it comes to graphic novels BOOM’s Something Is Killing The Children Volume 4 came in at number one followed by Viz Media’s Demon Slayer and Saga Volume 1 coming in third.
  • Comixology CEO David Steinberger steps down. Steinberger leaves Comixology to take a position at Amazon, an opportunity he apparently could not refuse. He’s been pivotal in making Comixology what it was, although there’s still some bugs to work out due to Amazon “updating” the app, which Steinberger had nothing to do with. He leaves the digital comic platform in the capable hands of Tom Ashley and Jeff DiBartolomeo, who’ve been with Comixology for over 8 years working under Steinberger.
  • Shawn Levy to direct Deadpool 3. This will be the third outing of the team of Levy and Reynolds. Their first pairing was Free Guy and the latest was the recent Netflix released The Adam Project. I have mixed feelings on the decision, but maybe that’s a conversation for another time. Levy seems to deal well with a quick quipping Reynolds and so I’m sure Deadpool will be in good hands.
  • Lastly a bit of breaking news, Jujutsu Kaisen 0 hits theaters on March 18! I’m definitely not an insider when it comes to anime, but I’d be lying if I said I’d never heard of the popular Jujutsu Kaisen. According to a recent review from Nerdist.com the new film is worth the wait. Kelly Knox gives the film a 5/5 rating and if you want to read more of her review you can check it out here!

Alright! That’s all the updates I have for this Monday. If anymore changes happen with these stories or others, I’ll be sure to let you know.
