Pop culture update for Oct. 25

It’s been a minute since I did one of these pop culture updates. There’s lots to talk about…but not quite enough to fill an entire blog. So, today I’m highlighting some recent news and trailers-comic book and otherwise-that been hitting this week.

Henry Cavill Returns. As per his cameo in Black Adam, Henry Cavill officially announces that he will indeed step back into the role as Superman. In a video he released on Instagram he said, “A very small taste of what’s to come, my friends. The dawn of hope renewed. Thank you for your patience, it will be rewarded.” Exactly how it will be rewarded is yet to be seen, but for now, it’s nice to see the boy back in blue.

The new Ant Man trailer looks amazing. Look, don’t judge, but the Ant Man movies are some of my favorite Marvel films. I mean, who doesn’t love a movie that can make you laugh? But this trailer looks awesome. It also looks like it has a total of six actual humans playing in it, the rest is completely CGI, but who cares if it has a pulse if it can entertain? Right? And wait…what? Was that Bill Murray? I’m in! If you haven’t see the trailer yet, check it out here.

Black Adam defies expectations. Reports are coming in that Black Adam’s opening weekend brought in an estimated $67 million dollars. While critics are giving it mostly “meh” reviews. Audiences have it at 90% on Rotten Tomatoes. It’s not the best superhero movie ever made, but it definitely isn’t the worst as mentioned in my own review for this very blog. Don’t pop the champagne just yet, opening weekend doesn’t determine the overall success of a film. We’ll see what the next few weeks bring. Moreover, let’s hope Warner Brothers Discovery can keep their s**t together long enough to finally take the DCEU somewhere interesting.

In memoriam. Not to end on a sour note, but I have to pay tribute to the great Leslie Jordan. Leslie died in a car crash that-reports say-was likely the result of a medical emergency as he was driving. To say that the universe has lost a bright shining star is to greatly underwhelm the value Leslie brought to many people’s lives before, during, and after the pandemic. I personally found his instagram posts right after the pandemic, so I was sort of late to the party, but I’m glad I discovered him then and was able to share the laughs and smiles with the rest of the world. He is already sorely missed.
