Meeting your heroes used to be a rare thing. We were once separated by time and distance and we would write letters. Letters to friends and family are one thing. Letters to our heroes were another. Sometimes we would get a letter back, sometimes not. Of course social media and the immediacy of apps like Instagram and Twitter made the chance of making contact significantly higher. On Wednesday, Fanboys can do even better.

Sam De La Rosa will be in person! Signing autographs, selling comics, art, and prints, and posing for photos at the Fanboys store in NorthEast Mall in Hurst, TX. In Person! At this point Sam De La Rosa needs no introduction but, indulge me. The Texas native (he grew up in San Antonio) is best known for his run on the comic Venom in 1993. It was Venom’s debut under his own title and the spark of so many anti-heroes yet to follow. If you ask De La Rosa which comic was his favorite to work on, he’s quick to Spider-man. It was his favorite as a kid, and was his favorite as an artist, but that’s not to say he isn’t familiar with other famous properties.

Under his credits you’ll find that he’s done work on Captain America, Black Panther, Squadron Supreme, Iron Man, What-If, Dr. Strange, Daredevil, The Thing, Spider Woman, Indiana Jones, Star Wars, and others. Of course I’d hate to forget the cover illustration he did for Fort Worth’s very own Magazine. In 2021, Fort Worth Magazine-under the people’s choice category-voted De La Rosa Best Artist in the People and Culture division. As a result his artwork graced the cover of the magazine with the historic stockyards in the background. Truly Iconic.

In Fort Worth Magazine’s article he says he “moved to Fort Worth because ‘my wife has a real job.’ Nowadays, he’s not so much drawing for comic books as he is making appearances as a ‘professional guest,’ signing autographs, and selling art at conventions and other events. One of those events is taking place this Wednesday on our Fanboys store in Hurst. He’ll be inside our store at NorthEast Mall in Hurst from 4pm-8pm. That store is located across from Seven and near JC Penney. Bring your favorite Sam De La Rosa comic for him to sign, or buy a Venom Funko Pop or action figure in store and have him sign it for you on the spot!

Sam De La Rosa stays pretty busy, just check out his special appearances list on his website. He averages about three appearances a month from Florida to California, some of them are at huge comic cons. This will be a great opportunity to meet him at a much more intimate event, away from the lines and the bustle of the big cons. So make plans to head to Fanboys this Wednesday the 25th, and meet one of your heroes face to face!
