Spelljammer takes D&D to space

If taverns and dank dungeons have already been fully explored and you need to spice up your next campaign, there’s good news. Wizards of the Coast releases Spelljammer: Adventures in Space on August 16th. The new books will take your next adventure far beyond anything you’ve seen on Earth. From their website:

Spelljammer: Adventures in Space presents the Astral Plane as a Dungeons & Dragons campaign setting unlike any other. Home of the stars and gateway to the heavens, the Astral Plane teems with excitement and possibility. With the help of magic, spelljammers can cross the oceans of Wildspace, ply the silvery void known as the Astral Sea, and hop between worlds of the D&D multiverse.

This set contains everything a Dungeon Master needs to run adventures and campaigns set in the starlit realms of Wildspace and the Astral Sea, as well as new options for players who want to create characters at home in this fantastic setting.

As reported on Nerdist.com: “Unlike most D&D campaign books, this guide contains three different volumes. The Astral Adventurer’s Guide, the setting, is a separate book that players can safely flip through without spoiling a monster stat block or the next plot point in the included adventure. Monsters hide inside Boo’s Astral Menagerie, and an adventure for levels 5-8 awaits in Light of Xaryxis. The three books are packed along with a map and Dungeon Master’s Screen in one astronomically cool package.”

Chris Perkins, Lead Designer for Spelljammer: Adventures in Space recently dropped some hints about the new release saying, “The vast ocean that is Wildspace is an exciting place for adventure.” But can a fantasy setting take place in space? It’s seems like we’re mixing worlds here and drifting a bit into sci-fi territory ala Star Wars. Perkins assures us they’ve kept that in mind. “You might not expect a setting in space to mesh well with your established sword-wielding characters and fantasy setting, but the Rock of Bral, for example, is a city on an asteroid that can serve as the backdrop of a fantasy, sci-fi, or any other kind of story.” reports Nerdist.com.
