The New Lego Atari 2600 is a Retro Gamer’s Dream
I never had an Atari. I knew some kids who did, though. It was the early 80’s and I was just a wee kid, but I wasn’t immune to those pixeled color and digital sounds. I’d sit for hours playing awesome games like Frogger and Asteroids and being oblivious to what video gaming would evolve into. These older kids lived a bit of drive away from home and so when my dad and I did go visit, I knew we’d be staying for a while. Which equaled a ton of game-time!
The New Lego Atari VCS 2600 Console immediately brought back all those memories. From LEGO’s website: “The iconic Atari VCS/2600 was an instant hit when introduced in 1977 and the new LEGO set is based on the four-switch revision which debuted in 1980. The release of the new LEGO set also comes in celebration of Atari’s 50th anniversary.” Not only is this a nostalgic centerpiece for any Lego collector or builder, but it packs some surprises.
The kit includes a moveable Joystick that mimics the movements of an actual Atari Joystick. Also include are three game cartridges, Adventure, Centipede and Asteroids; as well as three 3D mini lego sets representing the 2D games. If that wasn’t cool enough it also has a pop up scene recreating an 80’s game room, complete with wood paneling on the walls.
The release of the 80’s console set coincides with the celebration of Atari’s 50th anniversary and officially marries two legendary toy companies together, Lego and Atari. The LEGO Atari 2600 set is available from the 1st August 2022 via LEGO Stores and www.LEGO.com/Atari at the recommended retail price of $239.99.
